The owner of the plant, Stahlbush Island Farm, has made a name for itself as producer of organically grown fruit and vegetables. The Oregon farm’s organically grown and processed products (strawberries, blackberries, rhubarb, sweet corn and obviously pumpkins) are shipped to many countries worldwide. “In order to meet the very strict guidelines for sustainably cultivated fruit and vegetables we need organic fertiliser”, says the owner of Stahlbush Farm, Bill Chambers. “A biogas plant supplements our requirements in an ideal way. This plant converts production and processing residues to power and heat and uses them fully for processing. The fermented residues are spread on the fields where they help with the formation of humus and are needed as an important source of nitrogen." In a perfect development of natural principles, the plant adds the modern aspect of power generation to the age-old idea of natural cycles in agriculture.
